Mount Misen
The reverence for Mount Misen by the inhabitants of Miyajima has endured since the 6th century, and the reason is clear. Though it doesn’t claim Japan’s peak height (standing at about 500m, whereas Mount Fuji reaches almost 3,800m), the region’s ancient heritage mixed with the breathtaking panoramas you’ll observe from the peak make it a definite must-visit during your journey to the isle. Just a short 10-minute distance from Itsukushima Shrine, there’s a ropeway offering a relaxed ascent to the summit – ideal for stunning vistas of the island. For the avid hikers, numerous paths are available, taking approximately 2 hours to summit.
While ascending, you’ll spot both fauna and spiritual sites. Deer are a common sight, and on rarer occasions, with some luck, you might even encounter a wild monkey. In addition, varied exquisite religious structures accompany the path, all part of Daisho-in Temple rooted at the mountain’s base.
Omotesando Shopping Arcade
Shopaholics have much to explore at Miyajima as they wander the lively Omotesando, a 350m avenue filled with food stalls, souvenir booths, and artisanal boutiques. Don’t miss trying Hiroshima’s renowned dish, okonomiyaki—watch as these savory pancakes are crafted before your eyes. Owing to its proximity to the shoreline, delectable fresh oysters await your tasting as well. Those with a sweet tooth will savor momiji manju, a confection filled with red bean paste shaped as a Japanese maple leaf.
Numerous regional mementos are also available, ranging from traditional wood sculptures to genuine shamoji – rice paddles.
Momijidani Park
Although the park offers beauty throughout the year, an autumn visit will reward photographers with breathtaking visuals. With a dense population of maple trees, the transition in seasons bathes the landscape in a brilliant mix of reds and golds, establishing it as one of the most picturesque locations to witness authentic Japanese autumn. Additionally, with numerous streams and charming bridges, you’ll find serene moments while exploring Momijidani.
